Just because you are a vegan or vegetarian, doesn’t mean that you should be a pastafarian!
It is entirely possible to enjoy the benefits of a low carb diet while also abstaining from eating meat, dairy, and eggs. There is no shying away from the fact that it is harder than a conventional low carb diet.
You have to make sure you get the right nutrients and may sometimes require additional supplements.
If you don’t eat oily fish, for example, you may benefit from taking EPA/DHA capsules. You should make sure you get plenty of protein and healthy fats. You’ll most certainly end up making almost all of your own meals; restaurant dining can be a challenge for anyone on a low carb diet but it can be next to impossible for a vegetarian or vegan who is counting carbs.
Never fear! I’ve compiled a list of packaged snacks for vegetarians and vegans to enjoy when they don’t feel like cooking.
1 . Spicy Chipotle Seaweed Chips
These seaweed chips are *much* healthier than regular potato chips. You can load up on fiber, iron, vegetable protein, and vitamins while enjoying their satisfying crunch and interesting flavors. My personal favorite is the spicy chipotle flavor.
2. Vegan Cheese Kale Chips
Healthy Kale chips are gaining in popularity with vegans and carnivores alike. I like Alive & Radiant’s “Quite Cheezy” kale chips a lot. I didn’t even realize they were made with vegan cheese when I first tried them! So cheesy and yummy.
These chips are a no brainier. The entire bag has only 10 net carbs and is packed with much needed protein. They kind of have the texture of cheese doodles, but unlike regular cheese doodles they are completely vegan and you will actually feel full after finishing the bag.
By the way, I couldn’t resist trying these guys and I bought a ton of them. Check out my review here.
4. Stonewall’s “Pepperoni” Jerquee
This mock jerky is a wonderfully flavorful vegan treat. They are a bit high in fat, low in carbs (the ones pictured above have only 5 net carbs per bag) and have a good, meat-like texture if you are into that. I listed the pepperoni flavor but hot pastrami and teriyaki flavors are also awesome!
5 . Avocado
A ripe avocado doesn’t need much done to it! Cutting one of these open doesn’t require much more effort than opening a bag of chips. Sprinkle a little salt on them and you’re done!
